Of all the questions asked at Biden’s press conference, only one was relevant. NPR’s Asthma Khalid asked about Biden’s promise in 2020 to be a “bridge candidate” linking his generation to the next generation. Four years ago, Biden realized the need for an interim presidency. In one term, he has bridged the “I’ll make America 1950 again” rhetoric of Trump to the “Let’s do this together” attitude of the next, more progressive, generation. We thank Biden for accomplishing this task. He doesn’t have more work to do in this area. When Ms. Khalid asked the question — one that no one else in the room thought to ask — Biden punted, choosing instead to talk about what he had done for the economy. I don’t think Biden is senile or forgetful, but I do think he has forgotten, along with everyone else except Khalid, the role we elected him to do.
